Safety
First for Driving Force
26th
March 2007
An
ex-police driving instructor has been passing his skills to youth workers.
Staff
at the Youth Federation, Ellesmere Port, have been put through their
paces in a bid to improve their abilities behind the minibus wheel.
Former
North Wales Police driving instructor Keith Fawcett, was the man chosen
to train the workers in the project, which was part funded by the Learning
and Skills Council.

Keith
of Fawcett Driver
Training, said: "I have to congratulate the staff at the Youth
Federation for their enthusiasm and commitment. Apart from thoroughly
enjoying the training, they have ensured that they are taking reasonable
and valuable steps to ensure the safety of their clients, colleagues
and the general public on the roads."
Youth
Federation is a charity working with young people across Cheshire, Warrington,
Halton and Wirral, delivering youth work to young people and supporting
volunteers to engage in work with young people within their communities.
Eleven
members of staff who regularly carry young passengers to local and national
events received certificates confirming their status as MiDAS drivers.
The
Minibus Driver Assessment Scheme is run by the Community Transport Association
for organisations using minibuses. It involves classroom training and
a 70-minute assessment drive in a minibus.
Peter
Wilson of Youth Federation, said: "We've heard of minibuses being
invloved in accidents, but we have always taken the sensible approach
by ensuring that our staff are trained to a nationally recognised standard
of minibus driving."
