The Business Case

Fawcett Driver Training offer a number of courses assisting organisations to reduce their fleet running costs as well as fulfilling obligations of duty of care to employees, contractors or volunteers.

The true cost of accidents to organisations are nearly always significantly higher than the cost of repairs and insurance claims. Research into work-based accidents by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) suggests that for every £1 recovered through insurance, between £8-£36 may be lost via uninsured costs:

  • lost time in wages and salaries

  • lost orders and production

  • administrative costs

  • legal fees

  • other business disruption

Major reductions in fleet running costs can be achieved by companies investing in defensive driver training for their employees. According to Occupational Road Safety Alliance, one organisation investing in driver training over a four year period was able to secure a reduction in its fleet vehicle accident frequency from 40 to 9 accidents per million miles (over 75% reduction).

Driver training is more effective at reducing collisions than offering employees a financial incentive for staying accident free! (Gregersen 1996). Picture sourced from BBC news.

A case study of Southern Electric published by HSE saw a 30% reduction in costs associated with vehicle damage over a 5 year period following introduction of three simple procedures:

  • implementing a reverse in - drive away policy
  • "under bonnet" training
  • interviews with drivers involved in 2 or more incidents in 12-month period

To find out how much you could reduce your running costs check out the Fleet Support Group road traffic incident cost calculator.

Large financial gains can be made with a relatively small investment in driver training as part of a health and safety strategy.

As well as the financial benefits, organisations implementing a driver training policy report an increase in levels of staff motivation and public image.
